Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma tenders resignation; Swearing-in ceremony of new govt to take place after May 11

In Assam, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma today tendered his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at the Lok Bhawan in Guwahati, following the completion of the Assembly election process.

The resignation has paved the way for the formation of a new government in the state after the declaration of results.

Speaking to the media later, Dr Sarma said that the Governor has accepted the resignation of the Council of Ministers and dissolved the present Legislative Assembly.

He added that the Governor has asked the outgoing Council of Ministers to continue as a caretaker government until a new government is formed.

He said, the swearing-in ceremony of the new government is likely to take place after the 11th of May. He also added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to attend the ceremony.

On being asked about the next Chief Minister of the state, he said the BJP Legislature Party will decide on the leadership, after which the new Chief Minister will form the Council of Ministers.

He added that central observers have been appointed to oversee the process, and once the decision is finalised, the NDA will stake its claim to form the government before the Governor.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam, Anurag Goel, formally submitted the results of the Assam Legislative Assembly elections to the Governor and handed over the official list of newly elected Members of the Legislative Assembly.
