Ruling BJP-led NDA secures historic third term in Assam

The ruling BJP-led NDA has secured a historic third consecutive term in Assam, surpassing the 64-seat majority mark in the 126-member assembly. So far, results have been declared for 124 constituencies, BJP has bagged 82 seats, while its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has won 10 seats and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has secured 10 seats. On the other hand, Congress has gained 17 seats and leading in two, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and Raijor dal clinched two seats each and TMC has secured one seat each.
BJP leader and incumbent Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has won from Jalukbari constituency defeating Congress rival Bidisha Neog. Party leader Hitendra Nath Goswami defeated Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi in Jorhat seat. Pijush Hazarika of BJP won against Congress’ Sri Bubul Das in Jagiroad constituency. In Dhemaji, BJP’s Ranoj Pegu won against Sri Sailen Sonowal. In Sissibargaon, the party’s Jiban Gogoi registered a victory against Dulal Chandra Boruah of the Raijor Dal.
Assam Agriculture Minister and AGP leader Atul Bora retained Bokakhat assembly constituency, defeating Raijor Dal’s Hari Prasad Saikia. State Finance Minister Ajanta Neog retained the Golaghat assembly constituency for the sixth consecutive term, defeating Congress candidate Bitupan Saikia
Md. Nurul Islam of Congress clinched win in Srijangram constituency.
AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal secured victory in Binnakandi seat in Hojai district against AJP’s Rejaul Karim Chowdhury.
Polling in the state for all 126 seats was held on 9th of April recording the highest-ever voter turnout of 85.96 percent. 
The ruling BJP-led NDA’s main constituents are the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodo Peoples’ Front, while the opposition alliance comprises the Congress, Raijor Dal, AJP, CPI(M), All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC) and CPI(ML).
