AIIMS Doctor has emphasised for early detection of preeclampsia during pregnancy and creating awareness among pregnant women and families about its serious condition. Preeclampsia is one of the leading causes of maternal and newborn illness during pregnancy.
Preeclampsia usually presents with high blood pressure during pregnancy and may affect multiple organs, including the kidneys, liver, brain, and placenta. Talking to Akashvani News on the occasion of World Preeclampsia Day, Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, AIIMS, New Delhi, Dr Nina Malhotra said that if the condition is not detected in time, it can lead to seizures, stroke, organ failure, premature birth, and even death of the mother and baby.
Dr Malhotra said that pre-eclampsia can often be screened in the first trimester of pregnancy. She added that women identified with such a condition can benefit from preventive treatment, which can reduce the risk of developing severe pre-eclampsia. She said the treatment can significantly decrease complications for both mother and baby. Dr Malhotra said that monitoring of blood pressure, urine protein, foetal growth, and maternal symptoms helps in early diagnosis. She emphasised that awareness, screening, prevention, and timely treatment are the keys to defeating pre-eclampsia.
