AIIMS distributes AI-powered smart vision glasses to help the visually impaired

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, AIIMS, News Delhi has distributed artificial intelligence-enabled smart vision glasses to 40 visually impaired individuals, enabling them to interpret their surroundings through sound. Each glass costs around 35 thousand rupees and was provided free under the CSR initiative at a function held at Dr R P Centre of Ophthalmic Sciences.

These AI-enabled glasses convert visual information into spoken terms and also identify objects, recognise faces, detect obstacles and assist with navigation.

The device helps such a person manage their daily tasks independently, from identifying currency notes to locating doorways.

Talking to Akashvani News, Dr Praveen Vashist, in charge of Community Ophthalmology, said that AIIMS has planned to distribute around one thousand 700 such AI-enabled glasses to the visually impaired persons already identified from Delhi-NCR schools.

He said that such glasses will help them know about their surroundings so that they can lead a normal life.
