The All India Institute of Medical Sciences, AIIMS, has developed a new surgical technique that is being seen as a major breakthrough in treating severe spinal deformities. In a statement, AIIMS said the procedure has been used over the past seven years, offering hope to patients who earlier faced very high surgical risks and limited treatment options.
The technique is a modified version of a complex spine surgery known as posterior vertebral column resection. It was first described in an international scientific publication in 2020.
According to AIIMS, the modified method improves stability during surgery by preserving parts of the spine until later stages, which may help reduce complications and improve outcomes.
